Civil Service Pre-Employment Exam

Did you know that government employees are less likely to lose their jobs in a recession? Even our current pandemic proves that government jobs are the most stable jobs to have in any economic downturn. Well, then that begs the question, why don’t more people apply for a government job?

People don’t apply for government jobs because they can’t pass the Civil Service Exam. That’s right! The civil service exam scares some people so much they won’t even bother to give a government job a try. So let’s talk about the Civil Service Pre-Employment Exam.

What is the Civil Service Pre-Employment Exam

The Civil Service Exam is an exam that people who want to work for the government will have to take as a prerequisite before applying for a government job. The Civil Service Exam is for many types of government jobs. Not including political office, whether it’s for a Federal, State, or Local Government job, you will have to take a Civil Service Exam.

What does the Civil Service Pre-Employment Exam Include?

Now to be clear, there are many different versions of the Civil Service Exam. For Example, if you are applying for a job with the FBI, Police Department, Fire Department, or Post Office, your civil service exam will be more to see if you can do the job for which you are applying.

In contrast, any Civil Service Exams for Clerical government positions are very similar. The types of questions can vary from verbal, Clerical, Numerical, Reasoning, Memory, and Personality, to name a few.

In Conclusion

A full disclosure I have never had a Government job. However, both my mom and dad were government employees. One was with the federal government and the other with the local government. Both of my parents had great careers with good pensions and benefits.

Looking back, I kind of wish I had taken the easy route and followed my parent’s advice. The only silver lining in me going against the grain is I’m now sharing my experience with you so you don’t make the same mistakes as I did. Hi Moody. Thank you for another interesting article. I couldn’t agree more that civil service employment has lot of benefits, including some really good non-cash adds like insurance. I was looking into it recently and your information regarding civil service exams are very useful. I need to do some more research but its great starting point.

      Hi Cogito,

Thank you for commenting on my article. You are correct. There are a lot of benefits offered to civil service employees. My parents worked for the government, one federal and the other local, and retired very comfortably. , So yes, do your research and decide if a government job is for you.

If you are interested in a government job practicing the civil service exam is essential if you reside in the United States. Feel free to revisit my blog and sign up for our Moody Work newsletter to get more content that may be helpful to you!

This is really quite an interesting read thank you.

I imagine a lot of countries would have some version of this-I guess we’re lucky here in Australia, wife and I have worked for the state government here around 7 years, but none of us, or colleagues etc, have to do any test like this for our jobs.

For us, applying for other roles in the government comes down to nailing a good response (usually capped around 2 pages) to the ‘selection criteria’ stated on the job posting. First you have to nail these responses, in hopes of getting to interview stage, which is always a panel interview-always at least 3 interviewers, followed by the usual referee checks etc.

Thanks for sharing this information though, definitely interesting.
